What the first six months of SEO actually look like in Poquoson
People hear "SEO" and picture a switch that gets flipped. It's closer to a build-out that compounds. Here's the honest month-by-month for a Poquoson service business, so you know what you're paying for and when to expect movement.
Month one is diagnosis and foundation. I pull your current rankings for the searches that matter on the peninsula, map who's actually beating you — which is usually a Hampton or Newport News company borrowing your traffic across the line — and fix the technical basics: site speed, mobile layout, the title tags and page structure Google reads first. Nothing here is glamorous, but a site that loads slow or has thin, duplicate pages will cap everything else you do. This is also where I confirm your name, address, and 23662 phone number are consistent everywhere Google looks.
Months two and three are where the real content work happens. Most Poquoson trades have one skinny homepage trying to rank for a dozen different jobs. Google can't tell what you're best at, so it ranks you for none of them well. I build out dedicated pages for each service you sell and each nearby area you cover — Poquoson proper, plus the York County side into Tabb, Grafton, and Seaford where a lot of your customers actually live. This is slow, deliberate work, and it's normal to see very little ranking change during it. The groundwork is being laid; the payoff lags.
Months three through five are when things start moving. Google re-crawls the new pages, the fixes settle in, and you begin climbing for the longer, more specific searches first — "emergency" and "near me" and job-specific phrases before the broad head terms. This is also when we lean on reviews and local signals, because in a town this small, a steady flow of honest reviews moves the needle faster than it would in a big metro. You should be able to see, in plain Google Search Console data, which queries are gaining.
By month six you're competing for the searches that bring real calls, and the compounding kicks in — each ranking page strengthens the others. A realistic honest timeline for a Poquoson trade: small technical wins inside 30 days, the first meaningful ranking gains around month three, and durable page-one positions on money terms in the four-to-six month range. Competitive categories and anyone fighting the bigger Hampton Roads firms can run longer.
- Months 1 to 2: audit, technical fixes, NAP consistency, keyword and competitor mapping
- Months 2 to 4: service and area pages built out, reviews and citations underway
- Months 4 to 6: rankings climb on specific then broad terms, calls start compounding
Two things stay honest throughout. There are no guarantees on ranking positions — anyone promising a number-one spot by a date is guessing. And you get a written proposal with the actual scope and a monthly range before we start, plus Search Console data you can read yourself, so you're never taking my word for whether it's working. If you want to see where you stand today, start a project and I'll send back a real plan.
